There is a new snack in town from Deano’s Jalapenos up in Vermont. They are making Jalapeno Chips which are actual jalapenos, thin-sliced and dusted with either Ranch or Cheddar. These are not potato chips with jalapeno flavoring, but real jalapenos!
The (non potato) “Jalapeno Chip”
was first inspired at The Cactus Cafe in Stowe, VT by chef owner Doehne (a.k.a. Deano) Duckworth. One day it occurred to Deano that everyone was trying
to make their potato chips taste like jalapenos, so why not just use a real jalapeno?
Deano’s Jalapeno Chips have won several awards including the Weekend of Fire Winner in 2010 and most recently being awarded 3rd place in the unique snack category at the 2011 Fiery Food Awards.
Deano’s Jalapeno Chips come packaged in a 2.25 oz foil, resealable bag. According to the bag a serving size is 0.5 ounces, so there are about 4 1/2 servings per bag. The ingredients include: jalapenos, canola oil, corn starch, buttermilk solids, maltodextrin salt, modified corn starch, whey solids, garlic powder, parsley, guar gum, non fat milk solids, onion powder and citric acid. No trans fats, no cholesterol and no gluten.
Upon opening the bag, you immediately smell the nice aroma of jalapenos. They are thin and crispy. At first bite, there is a really nice crunch, followed by the taste of jalapeno and then heat of the jalapeno. There is a really nice balance of crunch – jalapeno flavor – heat. For this review, we were trying the ranch. For us, the ranch flavor was extremely mild. I appreciated this as I enjoy the real flavor of the jalapeno.
Because Deano’s uses fresh jalapenos, the amount of heat varies from batch to batch. Although these are not painfully hot, there is a nice heat level and you will definitely not munch these down like you would a bag of potato chips. We found that 4 to 5 at a time at one sitting was about right. What we also noticed, was that 10 minutes later we were craving more!
I can easily see how Deano’s Jalapeno Chips could become a bit addicting, especially for those of us who like crunchy snacks. If you are looking for a crunchy, fiery snack, you’ve got to try these chips from Deano’s…..or as Deano says, “Try a slice of spice”. Available at www.ArmadilloPepper.com.
