Smok’n Pig BBQ Review

This past weekend we tried the Smok’n Pig BBQ in Valdosta, Georgia. Located at 4228 North Valdosta Rd, it is easily reachable from I75 exit. Just take exit 22 in Valdosta and head east for approximately 1 mile. For those a bit further north, Smok’n Pig has a second location in Macon, Georgia.

As soon as you walk in you notice not one, but two huge walls of Smok’n Pig BBQ T-Shirts. I didn’t count the different designs, but there have to be 35 or more different types offered in a variety of colors. Then, as we are being seated you walk past the large salad and dessert bar creatively accented with his and her matching pigs.

It’s a family atmosphere with wood walls, wood benches in the booths and further accented by neon lights.

Service is quick to the table with menus and the choices are lengthy. Tonight we ordered the Brisket and Pork Deluxe sandwich (for the big appetite) along with theSmok’n Pig Special pulled-pork sandwich. The Brisket and Pork Deluxe sandwich is definitely for the “hungry” as it is essentially two sandwiches. The top is piled high with beef brisket and the bottom is piled high with pork. This is all assembled with three slices of Bar-B-Q bread, which is much like Texas Toast.

The meat is served without sauce, so now you have six options ofSmok’n Pig BBQ Sauce to select from including Original, Sweet, Sweet and Spicy, Southern Mustard, Hot and Carolina Style. Of course, we tried them all. I always like to comment on the hot sauce because there are some folks that like things really hot and then some don’t care for hot at all. The hot sauce has an excellent flavor, but is not really that hot. I would rate it a 2 out of a scale of 10 with respect to heat.

The original is a smokey sauce. Sweet is just that. Our favorite was the
Carolina which was just a little bit tangy and not too much mustard (of
course they have a mustard sauce also). Much like the T-Shirts, Smok’n Pig B-B-Q sauces are readily available for purchase as well.

Each sandwich comes with two sides and the choices are quite extensive:

  • Bar-B-Q Baked Beans
  • Creamy Cole Slaw
  • Old Fashioned Potato Salad
  • Fries
  • Baked Potato
  • Mac & Cheese
  • Corn on the Cob
  • Green Beans
  • Fried Okra
  • Brunswick Stew
  • Ma June’s Sweet Potato Souffle
  • Cream Corn
  • Collard Greens
  • Baked Granny Smith Apples
  • Roasted Red Potatoes
  • Broccoli Salad

So, how is the barbecue? The pulled pork and the brisket were extremely tender. The meat is flavorful, but ironically we did not find a strong smoke flavor as the name implies. Smok’n Pig has a sauce to suit just about everyone’s preference. The fries are typical crinkle cut fries and the slaw has a nice crunch and zesty (not spicy) flavor. The Brisket and Pork Deluxe sandwich with your choice of two slides was $8.99. I had skipped lunch and still could not eat everything.

This is good barbecue rating 3.5 out of 5. The value is simply incredible. I would challenge you to find this much food and this level of quality for only $8.99. Value is easily 5 out of 5 Overall, I would rate Smok’n Pig BBQ 4 out of 5. The bottom line for me is “Would I eat there again?” The answer is definitely yes!

This is one barbecue that you will have to drive on up (from Jacksonville almost everything is up) to give a try. Although their sauces and variety of T-Shirts are readily available for sale, there does not seem to be an on-line store. So, why not take a trip to Valdosta?
